Digital threats increased exponentially in 2020. This is shown by a new report from the security company Trend Micro.
Due to the pandemic, not only more people than ever practiced digital teleworking in 2020. The increased presence on the internet also meant that the number of security threats against home users and companies increased radically. It shows Trend Micros report “A Constant State of Flux: Trend Micro 2020 Annual Cybersecurity Report”. The report shows, among other things, that 126,000 security threats were detected per minute during the year, which according to the company is an increase of 20 percent compared to 2019.
Domestic workers affected
In particular, home offices and home networks were affected, where the number of attacks increased by 209 percent to almost 2.9 billion. The majority were attacks where attackers tried to gain control of a router or other smart device on the network.
However, the most common method was traditional phishing via email, which accounted for 91 percent of the 62.6 billion threats blocked by Trend Micro.
Ransomware is becoming more common
The number of so-called families in the ransomware threat group also grew by 34 percent. It also became increasingly popular among criminals with so-called double extortion, where the attacker first steals information such as customer data, financial information and various forms of personal information. Only then is the information encrypted, which means that the victim has lost control of his information in two respects. This in combination with the fact that particularly vulnerable industries such as authorities, healthcare and the manufacturing industry are at extra high risk of being affected.
