Expand the storage in your Playstation 5 with an extra SSD – possible in the summer of 2021

Sony opens for expansion of SSD storage in Playstation 5. In the summer of 2021, the Japanese gaming giant is expected to release an update to the software in Playstation 5 that makes it possible to install a secondary storage disk.

  • Via an update to the firmware software in the game console
  • Only 667GB free right out of the box is crazy too little
  • The update allows for faster fan speeds
  • Unclear exactly when the update may be ready (maybe summer 2021)

Both variants of the Playstation 5 have a fixed SSD drive and an extra module slot for M.2 NVMe drives. At the time of writing, the extra space is inactive and cannot be used, but this may be about to change.

According to the Bloomberg website, Sony plans to activate the M.2 slot in the Playstation 5 via a regular software update in the game console.
The update can already be released by the summer, according to the site’s information.

Being able to use the second M.2 place is highly anticipated. Playstation 5 has a vanishingly small 825GB SSD drive that only leaves 667GB of free space right out of the box. Given that some games can take upwards of 150-200GB, there is an indefensible amount of space.

Upgrading the device with new, super-fast storage space, which is also much larger, opens up more opportunities for Playstation 5 users to keep already installed games when they want to download new, PS5-optimized titles.

The same firmware update will also make it possible to run the game console’s built-in fans at a higher speed than they can handle today. This opens up for lower temperatures and a lower risk of poorer performance via underclocking if the system circuit and the graphics circuit become overheated.

It is unclear exactly when the update can be released and what other improvements it offers. It is worth mentioning that Sony does not want to confirm anything to Bloomberg at the time of writing.

“As previously announced, we are working to enable M.2 SSD storage expansion for PlayStation 5. The timing has not been announced and details will be shared later.”
