Apple has bought the weather app Dark Sky. Initially, there were no changes for iOS users as only the Android app would disappear. It is now announced that the Dark Sky app will also disappear from iOS.
- The Android app and the Wear OS app will disappear completely on July 1
- Hyperlocal forecasts at minute level
- One of the market’s first subscription apps
- Dark Sky is available on the App Store here
Dark Sky will disappear from iOS at the end of 2022. At the same time, the official website for the popular weather app will also be closed.
The message was posted on the official website by Dark Sky app co-founder Adam Grossman on June 7th. Just shortly after WWDC 2021 was held where several weather news for iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 were revealed.
Update: Support for the Dark Sky API service for existing customers will continue until the end of 2022. The iOS app and Dark Sky website will also be available until the end of 2022.

You can still buy Dark Sky from the US App Store if you want. The price is 3.99 USD, or about 33 kronor here in Sweden. Note that Dark Sky does not work with the App Store set in Sweden.
Dark Sky disappears from Android after Apple has bought the popular weather app. Dark Sky is a very popular and accurate weather app that has invested heavily in local weather with a really nice interface – and now many are wondering what will happen with the app.
I hope everyone was wearing their thunderwear, because Dark Sky closing is snow joke. It will be mist.
It is unclear today how much money Apple paid for Dark Sky. IN a press release on its website, the developer announces that the purchase is complete and at the same time announced that Dark Sky will continue to work just as usual on iOS (also without any change in price).
All Android users, on the other hand, end up in the cold as Dark Sky is removed from the market’s most popular operating system for mobile phones. The official website is also permanently shut down.
Dark Sky will be removed from Android on July 1, 2020 – restricting the API
In addition, Apple is restricting access to the API that many third-party developers use in their own weather apps. Among other things, the very popular Carrot Weather which is available for iOS, Android and macOS. Developers who use the API have until the end of 2021 to find new ways for the future.
It is both surprising and at the same time expected that the Android app will disappear.

Apple wants to keep all users within its own ecosystem, which suggests that Dark Sky would disappear from Android sooner or later anyway. But at the same time, the Apple-owned music app Shazam remains on Android so…
In our opinion, the purchase of Dark Sky and then the closure of the Android app is a hard blow under the belt on Apple’s part.
The weather app has a very good reputation, even though the app started a bit shaky with criticism as one of the market’s first subscription services for mobile apps. The price at launch was then 2.99 USD per year.
The difference between the free and subscription variant was as follows:
- Free: 24-hour and 7-hour weather forecast
- Free: Weather maps and prevailing weather conditions
- Premium: Weather forecast at minute level
- Premium: Notifications about rain
- Premium: Daily summaries
- Premium: Widgets
It was definitely worth paying those few tens every year for such a complete weather app as Dark Sky. Today, the app costs $ 3.99 and has no subscription as before.
There is only a small problem for us in Sweden who want to use the weather app. Dark Sky cannot be installed on iPhone for Swedish users.
Yes, Dark Sky is available for iOS and can be purchased on the App Store for $ 3.99. The app is available for both iPhone and iPad.

No, Apple has restricted access to the API. This means that other developers can NOT register for the API and existing users will be completely removed from the API by the end of 2021.
