New Nintendo Switch supports Nvidia DLSS – upscaling to 4K

The next generation Nintendo Switch can use a completely new system circuit from Nvidia. It reportedly supports DLSS which is an AI technology for upscaling graphics in real time.

The support for DLSS can be Nintendo’s solution to finally bring 4K resolution to the Switch series. Instead of displaying true 4K, the system circuit can convert a lower resolution to 4K quality without major loss of quality.

Nvidia DLSS was introduced with the RTX 20 series that the graphics card manufacturer released in the autumn of 2018.

Since then, it has been refined with the newest RTX 30 series that was released in September last year.

We have seen a very positive effect from DLSS in games like Cyberpunk 2077. There, players could get a performance increase of 20-30 fps, which is very much considering how demanding Cyberpunk 2077 is for even modern gaming computers.

Even the 2019 variant of the Nintendo Switch has to struggle with even holding 720p in handheld mode and 1080p in the TV dock. So DLSS would be a big improvement, even if the whole system circuit is also more powerful.

Nintendo Switch uses an old Tegra X1 system circuit that uses technology from 2015. There have been many new and exciting improvements in the category since then, so Nintendo has every opportunity to upgrade the Switch series with improvements under the hood.

According to the Bloomberg report Nintendo has a goal to release the new Switch model ahead of Christmas sales in 2021.
