Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has launched a new charging technology they call HyperCharge. It makes it possible to charge, for example, mobile phones with up to 200 watts.

Xiaomi answers questions about battery capacity

Xiaomi has released answers to some questions about the new, improved charging technology.

Among the answers, we learn that a mobile phone with a battery of 5,000 mAh is estimated to reduce its actual capacity to 4,200 mAh after 800 charges at a speed of 200 watts.

This means that you lose up to 20 percent battery capacity during what Xiaomi expects is a 2-year period.

Xiaomi also believes that the company’s HyperCharge technology is within the rules of what Chinese regulations require, which is that batteries must have 60 percent of their total capacity left after 400 charge cycles.

The new charging technology is a major boost to the 120-watt charging system housed in the Mi 10 Ultra. But it takes a lot to use HyperCharge.

8 minutes to charge Mi 11 Pro with HyperCharge

It takes eight minutes to charge a Mi 11 Pro with HyperCharge. If you use a cord. It is also possible to charge wirelessly in 120 watts, and then the charging time almost doubles to 15 minutes.

Charging with 200 watts – or even with 120 watts – can be compared to what Apple and Samsung offer.

For example, the iPhone 12 can handle a super slow charge of only 20 watts, while the Galaxy S21 Ultra can handle up to 25 watts. That is around a tenth of what HyperCharge is capable of.

Unclear how HyperCharge affects the batteries

One detail that is not clear is how HyperCharge negatively affects the batteries.

Extreme charging means that capacity deteriorates faster. And even if Xiaomi found a way to reduce the negative effect so we do not know how much.

Heat generation is also a problem that arises during fast charging. It’s also something Xiaomi has not told how they intend to counter.

The times – how fast the battery is charged with HyperCharge

  • 0 to 10 percent with cord: 44 seconds
  • 0 to 50 percent with cord: 3 minutes
  • 0 to 50 percent wireless: 7 minutes
  • 0 to 100 percent with cord: 8 minutes
  • 0 to 100 percent wireless: 15 minutes

The times indicate the charging of a battery of 4,000 mAh, or watt-hours.
