Turn off the camera sound on iPhone and iPad – you do

Do you want to use the camera on your iPhone or iPad, but do not announce what you are doing with a loud “click” sound? No danger – it’s easy to turn off the camera sound. At least indirectly.

In fact, it is not possible to mute the camera sound directly in a camera setting. For some unfathomable reason, Apple has chosen not to include it in iOS and iPadOS.

Thankfully, there are three ways to get around that limitation, even if it means you have to do a little trick. The easiest way to turn off the camera sound for iPhone and iPad:

Activate mute

You can mute all sounds with the mute button – and it also removes the camera sound. You can activate it on the side of your iPhone or via the volume buttons on your iPad.

Keep in mind that it is a system change that includes just about every sound. Your iPhone or iPad will be completely silent and will not announce incoming calls with a ringtone. So a little warning is in order.

Reduce the volume

If you do not want to mute via the mute button, you can turn down the volume all the way to the bottom via the side buttons. Same effect – no camera sound. But it does not affect incoming calls or videos, which may be desirable.

Enable Live Photo

With the Live Photo effect activated, there is no camera sound when you take a picture. Maybe not the best solution, but an emergency trick if the others do not work.

To activate Live Photo, open the camera app and check in the upper right corner.
