The corona crisis caused revenue in the app stores to explode in 2020. In the past year in particular, consumers spent more money on games than ever before. The Apple App Store remains significantly more profitable.
The year 2020 not only brought increasing sales for iPad and Mac, the app economy was also able to look forward to strong bubbling profits: like a new one assessment of the analysts from Sensor Tower showed, in 2020 for the first time more than 100 billion dollars were generated with the sale of apps in November. The App Store and Google Play Store brought in more money than ever before and several records were set.
Spending on apps and games increased dramatically over Christmas 2020
Over Christmas and the holidays, the strict Corona requirements that have been with people for many months now applied in many places, so consumers were looking for entertainment elsewhere: around 408 million dollars were spent on apps and games worldwide during this time, an increase of around 34% compared to the previous year. In 2019, sales over Christmas had also grown, even significantly, but only about half as much as in 2020.

Recently, consumers were particularly fond of spending a lot of money on games: the world’s most successful title was the Honor of Kings game, a production by the Chinese tech giant Tencent. It grossed around $ 10.7 million over the holidays, up over 205% over the same period last year.
Overall, games revenue increased significantly by around 27% and was around $ 95 million in 2020.
The most successful non-Spieloe app was TikTok with revenues of around $ 4.7 million. Overall, it can be seen that the App Store continues to generate the greatest revenue by far. Around 68% are accounted for by Apple’s software store, a plus of a good third.
