The moment I start writing the first sentence of this test, the white tower a few meters in front of me starts to make a fuss. The fans wind up and one of the lights at the top glows angrily red to indicate that the air quality in the apartment has suddenly deteriorated.

The air purifier Blueair Healthprotect 7470i has taken on the task of improving the indoor climate in recent weeks. The model is the manufacturer’s most advanced ever, according to its own statement.

Easy to use application

I jump into Blueair’s easy-to-use mobile application to see what’s up. It turns out that the so-called TVOClevels soared. “Very polluted”, it says next to the graph as an explanation.

TVOC stands for total volatile organic compounds or the total concentration of volatile organic compounds. The term is a bit blunt as it can include lots of different substances, some more dangerous than others. In this case, the sudden increase is due to the fact that I just sprayed my hands. The sensors in the Healthprotect 7470i are sensitive and react quickly to the pungent odor.

Now, ten minutes later, the Healthprotect tower has calmed down a bit and the red light has turned orange. The air purifier spreads the air around the unit, which means that you avoid a directed air flow, and when it is tough in the standard position, it is not noticeable at all.

Also measures particles

TVOC is just one of many measurements the Healthprotect 7470i uses to analyze air quality.

Unlike other stand-alone air quality meters we used – from Airthings and Eve for example – the Healthprotect 7470i also has sensors that keep track of the mass particles in the air. From one micrometer to ten. As with TVOC, the particles can contain different substances (for example from wood burning and studded tire wear) with different “degrees of danger” – but they are not good.

Cleans the air from the Sars-Cov-2 virus

According to Blueair’s information material, Healthprotect uses a technology that combines electrostatic and mechanical filtration. It will ensure that 99.97 percent of airborne particles such as allergens, dust, pollen, animal allergens, mold viruses and bacteria are captured.

A fresh survey conducted by MRI Global (most likely on behalf of Bluair) also shows that the Healthprotect 7400 series removes 99.99 percent of the live airborne Sars-Cov-2 virus. At the same time, Bluair’s information material states that the test did not examine whether the air purifier kills Sars-Cov-2 or reduces or prevents the transmission of Covid-19 infection. You can read more about the test here.

V-format Hepa filter

The V-shaped Hepa filter is easy to replace. The unit also has removable filters on the sides that can be cleaned. Photo: Blueair

The main filter is V-shaped and is called Hepasilent ultra and is easy to install. An indicator shows when it is time to change and a new one costs just over a thousand kroner. The air purifier also has a technology that will eliminate viruses and bacteria on the filters.

Blueair has been in the game for quite some time now and the build quality is undoubtedly high. But how well the air purification works is of course difficult to answer as a layman. We have no equipment that can fully validate the unit’s own measurements. But after a couple of weeks of use, I have, wrong or not, full confidence in the Healthprotect 7470i. The measurements presented in the app and the TVOC values I can measure myself to via two other air quality meters are relatively accurate. And they are kept at a low level at all times.

Healthprotect 7470i works best in auto mode

The unit has an auto mode that we use for everyday, but you can also adjust the fan speed manually or activate a night mode that mutes the screen at the top and ensures that the sound level is kept down. You can also schedule different settings, for example so that the night mode starts when you want.

Healthprotect - display
The screen on the top is clear and the buttons are easy to use. You can reduce the brightness of the app. The unit also measures temperature and humidity.

You control the air purifier via the mobile phone, voice or the motion-sensitive buttons on the top. The latter are clearly the easiest and fastest to use, but with small children or (as in my case) a curious cat, it is safest to deactivate the buttons and use the application instead. The installation and connection to the home’s wireless network is otherwise smooth.

Works with Alexa and Google Home – no Homekit support

Unfortunately, the Healthprotect 7470i has no connection to Homekit, with the right implementation it would have given me the opportunity to use my external meters to control the air purifier. However, you can connect it to Amazon Alexa or Google Home. Here it is voice control that is in focus, and in the name of honesty, it is not a must function. At least not for me.

By the way, in the application you can set the current position of the device. This allows you to use the Welcome Home mode, which increases the power of the air purifier when it detects that you, or at least your phone, are on your way home. It should ensure that the air is clean once you open the front door and that you hopefully avoid the fans going at full speed when it’s time to watch European Championship football on the sofa.

In the app you can see current and historical measured values of your indoor air. They can also be compared with external measurements of the outdoor air. In Stockholm and other major cities in the country, these values are probably more accurate than in rural areas.

Clean air costs a penny

Our test unit is adapted for a room of just under 40 square meters, but there are several models in the Healthprotect 7400 series for both larger and smaller areas.

As always when it comes to premium products, the price tag is high. At the time of writing, the Healthprotect 7470i costs approximately SEK 8,500.

There is no question that this is a really good product, but if it is worth the money, no one else can decide but you.
