WhatsApp shuts down support for iOS 9 / iPhone 4s

If you use WhatsApp on an old iPhone with iOS 9, it’s high time to replace you. The latest version 2.21.50 throws out the support for iOS 9.

This means that you must upgrade to iOS 10 or later if you want to continue using WhatsApp in the future. That means you must have an iPhone 5 or later.

It is worth mentioning that old versions of WhatsApp will work on iOS 9 and iPhone 4s for a while to come. But you do not get all the optimizations, new features and bug fixes that new versions offer.

In addition, it is unclear how long WhatsApp intends to allow old versions of its app. They may notify you at any time that you must upgrade to continue using the service.

Thankfully, it’s easy to upgrade without losing your chat history, at least if you’re just switching to a newer iPhone.

Then you can use the cloud service iCloud to transfer the history.

If, on the other hand, you want to try something new and go to Android, it will be a little trickier. You can make a backup via WhatsApp in your mobile, copy the backup to, for example, OneDrive, Dropbox or Google Drive, and then transfer it to your Android phone.
Here are the new, official requirements for using WhatsApp on your mobile phone:

  • Android version 4.0.3 or later
  • iPhone of version iOS 10 or later

The last time WhatsApp updated its mobile requirements was in February 2020 when they dropped support for iOS 8.
